Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate production of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)s and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)s from
whole blood cells (WBCs) from women with endometriosis (ES) and their levels in peritoneal fluid (PF) of women
with ES
Methods: The production of IGF-I, free IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-3 by lipopolysaccharide-stimulated
WBCs from women with ES (n=24) and normal control (n=19) were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent
assay. These IGF components were also measured in PF of study participants.
Results: No significant differences in the production of IGF-I, IGF-II, and IGFBP-3 by WBCs were noted between
women with ES and normal control women. The IGF-I concentration in PF of women with early (102.5¡¾8.4 ng/ml)
and late (93.2¡¾5.8 ng/ml) stage of ES was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that (69.5¡¾10.1 ng/ml) in normal control
women respectively, but no significant differences in free IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-1, and IGFBP-3 concentrations
in PF between women with ES and control women were noted. The production of IGF components by WBCs and
their levels in PF were not different according to the clinical stage of ES.
Conclusion: The IGF-I concentration in PF was significantly higher in women with ES than in normal controls, but
other IGF components in PF and production of these components by WBCs showed no difference.
